License Expiring? The Quickest TDI Renewal You’ll Ever Do

License Expiring? The Quickest TDI Renewal You’ll Ever Do

If your TDI license is about to expire, don't panic. And don't waste time clicking through confusing portals. You can complete the entire renewal in under five minutes, even on a busy day.

Here's how to make it the fastest TDI renewal you've ever done.

Why You Should Renew Early

Many agents wait until the last week, but that is a mistake. The system can get slow, you might forget a step, or you may find out you are missing CE hours.

Renewing early gives you peace of mind. You avoid late fees. And you will never need to tell a client, "I am not licensed right now."

Step 1: Log into Your TDI Account

Skip the paperwork. Go straight to the official Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) licensing portal. Use your existing credentials. You do not need to re-enter past course history.

If you forgot your password, use the "Forgot Password" link. It takes two minutes. Do not create a new account.

Link to use: The Sircon or NIPR portal. Both work with TDI.

Step 2: Confirm Your CE Hours

The system already tracks most continuing education credits. Just check that the system marks your required hours as "complete."

Texas requires:

  • 24 total CE hours every two years
  • 3 hours of ethics (included in the 24)
  • 4 hours of annuity training if you sell annuities (one-time requirement)
  • 8 hours of long-term care training if you sell LTC (initial, then 4 hours each renewal)

If anything is missing, upload your certificate instantly. Digital copies only. No scanning required. Just download the PDF from your CE provider and upload it to the portal.

What if TDI did not track my hours? Some providers report automatically. Others do not. Always keep your own certificates. You can upload them yourself.

Step 3: Pay Online

Use a credit card or electronic check. The payment step takes less than 60 seconds. No waiting for invoices. No mailing physical checks.

Fees:

  • Renewal fee: $50 per license
  • Late fee: $50 if you renew after your expiration date

If you have both Life & Health and Property & Casualty licenses, you pay 50 for each. That is 100 total.

Step 4: Download Your Renewed License Immediately

Once payment clears – usually right away – your new license is available as a PDF. No waiting days for mail delivery. No lapsed coverage.

Download the PDF and save it to your computer and your phone. You can also print a copy for your office. The PDF is your official proof of license. You do not need to wait for a paper copy in the mail.

What If Your License Already Expired?

If your license has expired, do not panic. You can still renew it.

  • Less than 90 days expired - You can renew online. Pay the renewal fee plus a $50 late fee.
  • More than 90 days but less than one year expired You must contact TDI. You may need to reapply.
  • More than one year expired – You must retake the pre-licensing course and pass the exam again.

The best way is to renew before the expiration date. It saves you money and stress.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Problem: The portal says my CE hours are missing, but I finished them.

Fix: Upload your certificate. If your provider reported late, you can upload proof. Keep all certificates for at least four years.

Problem: I forgot my password and cannot log in.

Fix: Use the "Forgot Password" link. If that does not work, call TDI support at (512) 676-6500.

Problem: My payment went through, but my license still says expired.

Fix: Wait one hour. The system updates slowly sometimes. If it still shows expired, call TDI.

Problem: I am out of state and cannot log into the Texas portal.

Fix: You can renew from anywhere. Use the NIPR website if the Texas portal is slow.

How to Avoid This Next Time

Set a calendar reminder for next year's renewal right now. Put it in your phone. Set it for 60 days before your license expires.

That way, you will never face an "expiring soon" email again. But even if you do, you know the fastest way through.
