Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible to be the parent instructor?

Yes, as long as you meet all of these Texas requirements:

  • Be the teen's parent, step-parent, grandparent, or legal guardian
  • Hold a valid Texas driver's license (not expired or suspended)
  • Your license must have been active for at least 3 of the last 5 years
  • No more than 1 moving violation in the past 12 months
  • No DWI convictions in the past 3 years
  • No license suspensions in the past 3 years
Is this course approved by TDLR and accepted by DPS?

Yes. Our course is fully approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) under approval number #C3664. The certificate you receive is accepted at all Texas DPS offices when your teen applies for their learner license or provisional license.

How much does the full program cost? Are there hidden fees?

The course is $49.99 plus applicable Texas sales tax (typically 6.25%–8.25%). There are no hidden course fees. Your only additional costs are:

  • Program Guide Packet – required by Texas law, ordered separately from TDLR (usually around $20–$30)
  • DPS license fees – learner license + provisional license (approximately $16–$33 total)
  • ITTD program – free online course
  • Behind-the-wheel practice – no cost, but you provide the vehicle and gas

Total out-of-pocket beyond the course is typically $40–$70, depending on DPS fees and your location.

How long does it take to complete the entire Teen Driver program?

The online portion takes most students 2-4 weeks (32 hours total, self-paced). Texas law also requires 44 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (including 10 hours at night). Most families complete the full program in 4-6 months, but you have up to 1 year of course access.

What is the ITTD program? Do I have to complete it?

Yes, ITTD is mandatory in Texas. The Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program is a free, 2-hour online video course required by DPS before your teen can take the road test for their provisional license. We explain exactly when and how to complete it inside the course.

My teen already has a learner license. Can they still take this course?

Yes. This course works for teens at any stage. Whether your teen hasn't started yet, already has their learner license, or has completed some driving hours — they can still use this course to meet the remaining requirements.
