Most Texas real estate sales agents and brokers need 18 hours of approved continuing education (CE) for each renewal period. This includes 4 hours of Legal Update I, 4 hours of Legal Update II, 3 hours of contract-related coursework, and 7 hours of elective CE. Certain brokers and delegated supervisors may also need the 6-hour Broker Responsibility Course.
Legal Update I and Legal Update II are two required 4-hour courses for Texas real estate license renewal. They cover current TREC rules, laws, forms, agency, ethics, and other important real estate topics. Both courses must be completed during the applicable renewal period.
The 6-hour Broker Responsibility Course is required for certain brokers and delegated supervisors with supervisory responsibilities. If you are a non-supervising sales agent or broker, this course is generally not required as part of your renewal CE.
You must complete the full course hours for the CE credit awarded. For example, a 4-hour CE course must be completed for the full required course time before credit can be awarded.
You should complete your required CE by your license expiration date. If your CE is not complete when you submit your renewal, TREC may allow a 60-day CE deferral with a $200 fee, subject to its requirements.
If your CE is not completed when you renew, you may be able to use TREC's 60-day CE deferral by paying the required $200 fee, subject to TREC requirements. Otherwise, your license may be renewed inactive until the required CE is completed and the license is returned to active status.

For most Texas real estate sales agents and brokers, renewal requires 18 hours of approved CE, including Legal Update I, Legal Update II, and 3 hours of contract-related coursework.
