Effective January 1, 2026, all renewing brokers and delegated supervisors must complete the 6-hour Broker Responsibility Course as part of their 18-hour CE requirement.

First-time sales agent renewals follow different SAE requirements.

Legal Update I and Legal Update II are required 4-hour courses for Texas real estate license renewal.

Legal Update I focuses on laws, rules, and forms. Legal Update II covers agency, ethics, and current real estate topics.

Both courses must be completed during the applicable renewal period using TREC-approved course versions.

The Broker Responsibility Course is a 6-hour TREC-approved course covering broker duties, supervision, compliance, and professional responsibilities.

Effective January 1, 2026, all Texas brokers renewing their licenses must complete this course, regardless of whether they currently supervise sales agents.

Sales agents designated as delegated supervisors must also complete the course.

The 6 hours count toward the required 18 total CE hours. They are not additional hours beyond the 18-hour requirement.

Important: If you are a broker or delegated supervisor, verify that your selected course package includes the Broker Responsibility Course before purchasing.

You must complete the full instructional requirements of each TREC-approved CE course to receive credit.

For example, a 4-hour Legal Update course carries four hours of approved continuing education credit after successful completion of all required lessons and assessments.

Online courses offer flexible learning, but students must still meet the approved course requirements.

You should complete your required CE before your license expiration date.

TREC recommends completing CE at least 10 days before expiration to allow time for education records to be processed.

If you renew on time but your CE is incomplete, you may qualify for a 60-day CE deferral by paying the $200 deferral fee.

The deferral period runs from your license expiration date. It does not extend your license expiration date.

If you submit your renewal on time but have not completed the required CE, TREC generally provides two options:

• Pay the $200 CE deferral fee to remain active while completing the missing education within 60 days after your license expiration date.
• Renew your license in inactive status until you meet the requirements to return to active status.

If you choose the deferral option but do not finish the required CE within the 60 days, your license will be placed on inactive status.

Important: If you submit a late renewal after your license has expired, the standard active-renewal CE deferral option is not available. Additional renewal requirements and fees may apply.

Yes. You can combine courses from different TREC-approved CE providers to meet your renewal requirements.

Make sure each course is approved for the appropriate CE credit and that you do not duplicate courses within the same renewal period.
