Texas Real Estate CE 2026-2027: Key Changes Brokers Need to Know
If you hold a Texas real estate broker license, the 2026-2027 CE cycle brings a significant change you cannot ignore. Here's what you need to know before your next renewal.
Quick Summary
-
All brokers must now complete the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course — regardless of whether they sponsor agents
-
The change took effect January 1, 2026
-
Total CE requirement remains 18 hours every two years
-
For brokers, the breakdown is now: 4 hrs Legal Update I + 4 hrs Legal Update II + 3 hrs contract + 6 hrs Broker Responsibility + 1 hr elective
-
Sales agents are not affected unless designated as a supervisor
- Legal Updates for 2026-2027 are new — previous cycle courses don't count
Wha Changed for Brokers
For years, the Broker Responsibility course was only required for brokers who sponsored sales agents. That changed on January 1, 2026.
Under Senate Bill 1968, every broker applicant or broker renewing on or after that date must complete the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course — even if they don't supervise anyone.
Why this matters: If you're a broker who has been skipping this course because you don't sponsor agents, that exemption no longer exists. You must complete it as part of your 18-hour CE requirement.
The New 18-Hour Breakdown for Brokers
| Requirement | Hours |
|---|---|
| Legal Update I | 4 |
| Legal Update II | 4 |
| Contract-related coursework | 3 |
| Broker Responsibility | 6 |
| Electives | 1 |
| Total | 18 |
That leaves brokers with only 1 hour of true elective choice. Plan accordingly — there's no room for extra courses beyond the required categories.
What About Sales Agents?
Sales agents are not required to take the Broker Responsibility course unless their broker has designated them as a supervisor.
For sales agents, the 18-hour breakdown remains:
| Requirement | Hours |
|---|---|
| Legal Update I | 4 |
| Legal Update II | 4 |
| Contract-related coursework | 3 |
| Electives | 7 |
| Total | 18 |
What the Broker Responsibility Course Covers
The 6-hour course focuses on the regulatory aspects of managing, operating, and supervising a real estate brokerage firm.
Topics include:
- Legal and ethical obligations of a broker
- Supervisory responsibilities and delegation
- Trust account and recordkeeping requirements
- Advertising and marketing compliance
- Risk management and office policy
Even solo brokers with no agents under them must understand these rules, which is why TREC made the course mandatory for all brokers.
Legal Update Reminder
The 2026-2027 Legal Update I and II courses are now available. These are new versions — if you took Legal Updates in the 2024-2025 cycle, those courses do not count toward this renewal.
The 2026-2027 Legal Updates must be completed by 11:59 PM Central Time on December 31, 2027.
The CE Deferral Option
If you can't complete your CE by your expiration date, TREC offers a CE Deferral option:
- Pay the $200 deferral fee before your expiration date
- Renew your license in Active Status
- Get 60 extra days to complete your education
This is a safety net, not a strategy.
The Bottom Line
The 2026-2027 CE cycle brings one major change for brokers: the Broker Responsibility course is now mandatory for everyone. If you're a broker, plan for 6 hours of Broker Responsibility, 8 hours of Legal Updates, 3 hours of contract coursework, and just 1 elective hour.
If you're a sales agent, your requirements haven't changed — 18 hours with 7 elective hours.
Either way, complete your CE early, check your TREC profile after each course, and don't wait until the last minute.
