Texas Insurance CE Audit: What to Do If TDI Requests Your Records

Most Texas insurance agents complete their CE, get their certificate, and move on. But what happens if TDI later asks you to prove it?

It can happen. TDI audits agents and providers to confirm CE compliance. If you cannot produce records, you could face fines, delays, or license issues — even if you actually completed the courses.

Here’s how to be ready.

Why TDI Audits Happen

TDI verifies CE compliance in several ways. Providers report completions electronically. But sometimes records don’t match, courses aren’t credited correctly, or an agent is selected for a random or targeted audit.

Starting September 1, 2026, electronic verification becomes even more important under SB 912. TDI must confirm CE compliance through the state system before renewing a license.

If something looks missing or inconsistent, TDI may ask you to provide proof.

What TDI May Ask For

If you’re audited, TDI may request:

  • Certificates of completion for each course
  • Course names, course numbers, and provider names
  • Dates of completion and hours credited
  • Proof that courses were TDI-approved
  • Your CE transcript from Sircon

You should be able to match what you submit to what’s in your Sircon record.

How Long to Keep Records

Keep your CE certificates and completion records for at least four years. That covers your current renewal cycle plus extra time in case of a delayed audit.

Save digital copies. Paper certificates fade, get lost, or get thrown away during office moves. A simple folder on your computer or cloud drive is enough.

Common Mistakes That Cause Problems

Assuming the provider reported it. Providers are supposed to report CE, but mistakes happen. Check your Sircon transcript after every course.

Not keeping certificates. If your provider goes out of business or changes systems, your certificate may be the only proof you have.

Taking a course that doesn’t count. If the course wasn’t TDI-approved, or didn’t fit the required category, it won’t count — even if you completed it.

Waiting until renewal to check. If your transcript is missing hours, you need time to fix it. Don’t wait until the last week.

How to Prepare Now

After every CE course, do three things:

  1. Download and save your certificate.
  2. Log into Sircon and confirm the course appears in your transcript.
  3. Keep a simple log of course names, dates, and hours.

That’s it. It takes a few minutes and can save you a lot of stress later.

The Bottom Line

CE audits are not common, but they happen. The best defense is simple: keep your certificates, check your Sircon transcript, and make sure your courses actually count.
